Live Music by Cassie Watson Francillon and Sasha Masakowski
Join the Whitney for a performance by Cassie Watson Francillon & Sasha Masakowski at Free Friday Nights, co-presented by Brooklyn-based performance venue and community space Public Records. Avant-garde harpist Cassie Watson Francillon's music is steeped in liberation, psychedelia and Black American sonic components that defy genre and boundaries. With roots in Brooklyn and New Orleans, she crafts a modern-day revival through enmeshed soundscapes on concert harp. Collaborator Sasha Masakowski splits her time between Los Angeles and her hometown of New Orleans. She has earned an international reputation as a fearless vocalist, improviser and producer versatile from traditional jazz to futuristic stylings at major clubs and festivals abroad, including Monterey Jazz, Blue Note NYC and Cotton Club Tokyo. Tonight, they include selections from their album Suite, born from their mutual thirst to create modern electronic & ambient music during the height of Jazz Fest in New Orleans. From the inaugural collab activation at Domino Sound Record Shop, they forged a bond to contemporaneously affirm feminine mastery, duality and co-creation of expansive sonics. Sparks of improvisation, minimal elements, electro-harp and dream-state bass reflect the full command and designs of the pair. Themes of timelessness, vulnerability and embodied joy weave a sultry score that creates space for discovery and destined (internal and outward) revolutions. The project has appeared live at Superbowl LIX Gallier Hall, New York Academy of Art, New Media Art & Sound Summit of Austin TX, Cathedral of Peter and Paul and more.
