The Year of Living Dangerously
Dir. Peter Weir. 1983, 115 mins. Australia/U.S./Philippines. 35mm. With Mel Gibson, Sigourney Weaver, Linda Hunt. Bembol Rocco, Michael Murphy. Operating at the height of his storytelling powers, and following his international successes with Picnic at Hanging Rock and Gallipoli, Australian director Peter Weir took a big swing with this sweeping yet intimate historical drama. Set in Indonesia in the mid-sixties in the lead-up to the overthrow of President Sukarno’s government, Weir’s adaptation of Christopher Koch’s acclaimed novel centers around an Australian journalist (Gibson) and his romantic relationship with a British embassy officer (Weaver) and his professional one with a Chinese Australian photojournalist (Hunt, in an Oscar-winning performance). Suspenseful, romantic, and intelligent, the film predicted Weir’s remarkable run in Hollywood, yet stands on its own as a singular 1980s entertainment that traffics in politically complex themes with nuance and depth.
